A few weeks ago I was talking with a friend who is thinking about redoing his website since his current website is very simple and has not been updated in a every long time.
I want to share with you the suggestions and recommendations I gave him.
You see, when thinking about a website redesigning, the biggest mistake is not to be clear about your website’s main goal.
I know what you’re thinking now.
It seems totally obvious.
However, it is not.
In most cases the main goal of the website is to sell.
So question we need to ask ourselves is: why do we spend weeks and months designing a website and why don’t we think what is it that we need to do, so you can have a website that sells your services.
Let’s start with the errors to avoid, as it’ sometimes easier to rule what you are not supposed to do.
3 Reasons why your website does not sell your services
Here are 3 mistakes you should avoid when you are working on the design of your website:
Error # 1: Delegate the entire design process of your website
The worst thing you can do is to completely delegate the design process of your website.
Web designers have experience designing websites, but this does not mean that they have experience selling your services.
Remember nobody knows the business better than you do.
Error # 2: Devote hours, days and weeks to making decisions that have no effect on results
The reality is that neither the logo nor the colors of your website are key factors in the success of your website.
Understanding this before you start, will save you many headaches.
Error # 3: Thinking that designing a website is a project with beginning and end
It is a mistake to think of your website as a project that has a start date and a completion date.
In other words, this means that you should avoid thinking that once the first version of your website is ready, you can stop thinking about the website and take care of other areas of your business.
The work on your website should never end.
You should constantly measure the results of your website and constantly make changes to improve it.
I have created an infographic that illustrates the 3 reasons why your website does not sell your services.

Now that you know the mistakes you need to avoid, you’re probably wondering what do you need to do.
And the answer is that it will vary depending on your industry and business.
However, to help you get started, I want you to think about answering the following 3 questions:
3 Questions to answer before starting to design your website
Question # 1: How will you generate traffic to your website?
You must think about how you are going to attract your audience to your website. The reality is that you need an audience interested in our services.
Question # 2: What kind of content will you include and how often will you update it?
The purpose of your business website should be to sell, but what is going to make your website sell are not the logo nor the colors, but rather the content.
You need to effectively communicate the message or problem that your service solves.
Question # 3: What is the simplest viable version of the website?
It comes down to thinking what is the easy and simple way to get the work done. The purpose of this question is to decide what time you can invest in the design of the website.
The sooner you finish your website, the faster you can test it and measure its effectiveness.
This will allow you to refine the message and continue the improvement process that will also allow you to get better results.
It’s not enough to have the best intentions when designing your website, however that is not enough.
Take note of the 3 errors to avoid when designing a website and make sure you answer the 3 questions before you get started.
